We could tell he was sad to leave his mother and all he had known in his short life. His skin was dry, dirty and scaly. He didn't have any shoes and his clothes were old and torn. He kept his head down, not making eye contact with anyone. He didn't know what was ahead of him, and we could tell he was afraid. I got on my knees in front of Emmanuel and said (through a translator), "I have a home where a lot of children live together, and I would like to take you there. You will have a bed to sleep in and food to eat. Would you like to go with me?" I reached out my hand, he took mine, and we went to the bus. We dropped him off at the home, and I didn't see him again until we visited the home a year later. When we arrived at LHI, Emmanuel was there, front and center, with all of the children singing greetings to us. Not only did he have the biggest smile on his face, but he looked healthy!
